Nursing Mom

I wasn't there, so I don't know what really happened, but I have had a bit of a fear of nursing in public since the woman got kicked off the plane for nursing. Like I said, I wasn't there, and I don't know exactly what happened, and it is entirely possible that she was hanging out all over the place or something. However, it is also entirely possible that someone was just freaked out that she was nursing. I have been around a lot of people like that. I was even told at a Little League game by a coach that, "This is a park that has family values. We don't want you to do that here." And I had taken the baby to the car with tinted windows to nurse. This piece is my answer, because I was very young and shy at that time, and I am sure I just mumbled some apology in reply. This is still a work in progress. She needs a nose and fingers. I am planning to stitch those in. However, I need to get working on the children's quilts for the 40 Quilts Donation project, so that is what I will get done this week.

Wonderful! I'll be interested in how it finishes.

I think I get to quilt the service project you're piecing--

Family values - what pray tell is more valuable that nursing your baby...

I have seen some nursing that is "awkward" to say the least and others that are more "refind" but I think that smore people are far to sensitive.

Love the piece... (& I love that you are nursing.)

Definitely cool! Keep going!

(what does a stupid man know about nursing anyway?)

Considering some parents lanuage on the ball field. LOL. Will this be a single block or will there be more? A family values quilt?

At a church once, I was asked to leave the -nursery- while I was nursing my daughter!! I was told to take her to the restroom! I asked the lady if she often takes her breakfast to the restroom to eat!

It's a very nice block, Jules!

Love the block. Hate that some still have "issues".

heh, that woman on the plane situation. I'm almost embarrassed to live in the state where it happened (though none of those involved was from here, but still...) If I could have had a baby immediately I'd have gone up to the airport in Burlington to nurse in public until our repuation was redeemed. ;o)

I love the block, and the idea of a "Family Values" quilt sounds very cool. You could do a PS3 with a circle and line through it. ;o)

Some people have mighty strange issues. Nursing a baby is natural, normal, and directly from God.
Love your little madonna quilt.

Years ago, when I nursed my children, I thought that the issue would disappear with so many more women choosing this path. While I don't agree with shaming women who choose not to nurse, I do think it is one of the most natural ways to bond with one's child. I am so glad that my daughter has chosen to nurse her own children.

Not that most mothers choose to nurse in public, they simply respond to hungry infants! Good for you, Jules, and I love the block.

Isn't it amazing that in this day and age people still have issues with something so natural and wonderful as a mother breastfeeding her baby? Love your quilty response to that. Can't wait to see it all done.

I'll tell you a funny. My dear mother was of the generation that thought formula was the best. I had the Legal Adult in '85 and decided to nurse him. We went to our family reunion, in Alabama, and Mom waged a campaign to get me to stop nursing. It worked, I'm sorry to say, as I was all of 22 and didn't have all that great info we have about it now.
In '95, I had the boy scout and nursed him. Unfortunately, my marriage to his dad ended and he was a little harder to comfort, so he nursed until he was around 18 months old. My mother and I were on the phone and he walked up to me and said, "Nurse, nurse." Mom was insensed...in her thick southern drawl she told me, "It seems to me if that baby can say nurse, he don't need to be a'doin' it!"
Love your block! Rock on!(Sorry this was long!)

I had the same question as Amy about family values. What a foolish, foolish man.

Can't wait to see how your piece turns out.

I echo the sentiments of the sisters above. It floors me to think that in this day of rap music, obscene lanquage and rampant sex on TV (and half-naked cheerleaders), that people still make a fuss about nursing. Good grief.

The piece is great! I love the concept, too. You rock!

PS: Yes you can have wine advice any time, and thank you for making a tassel for my shawl.

Lovely piece! I nursed my children too and find the ignorance of some to be distrubing. I can't believe that there are still people that have a problem with nursing in public. It doesn't suprise me actually, it just upsets me that they act on it. Oh well, I think there are way more that support it, so I should be happy for that.

I breast fed all five of mine. And wow betide anyone one who gave me a hard time.
In a restaurant in Alice Springs an elder gentleman had the nerve to glare at me. i glared back and kept on breast feeding :)
I'm with the others it's unbelievable you see what you see down the street. Girls in far to short and tight clothing and Mother's get glared at for breastfeeding!
In Australia it is against the law to descriminate due to breastfeeding.
