Do Other People Really Want My Art?

I enjoyed making those post cards yesterday. And I started working on a couple more today. I guess I am really working on finding my style. I have plans to send these post cards to friends to say hello and tell them I am thinking of them. For example, the fish one is going to a friend who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Then I started thinking. I am foisting my art on them. What if they really don't want it? I mean, I will never know if they just throw it away, I suppose. I have never given a quilt that has not been well received. But, I pick my recipients carefully. I don't just give quilts willy nilly. So, what do you think? Have you ever given art that has not been well received? Have you ever been given a piece of art you just cannot stand? And then, what do you do?

A couple of other things...
A shout out to the guys at Jiffy Lube on Sandy Plains. I was in and out of there in under 15 minutes. They talked to me like I understood the workings of my vehicle, and took the time to explain the difference between the two oils so I could make an informed decision. They didn't try to sell me any services I didn't need. They were lovely to my children. And, they did all the over the grease pit driving for me, as I am scared to do that. So thanks guys!

Thanks to the lady in the Publix parking lot. She stood there and talked to the baby while I got the 2 year old in her car seat. Really just a sweet woman. I was feeling very frazzled, and she made my day by saying she thought four kids was just perfect. (You don't know how many people feel the need to tell me I have too many kids.) I did thank her at the time, but I wanted to let you all know how much we young moms appreciate and need a little help and some affirmation.

And one final thank you to the Atlanta Sewing Center for having the Bernina free motion quilting foot I needed in stock. I have misplaced my darning foot, which means no free motion quilting. I was having withdrawals. I got a different foot with a bigger hole, so if I find the other one, it won't be a repeat.

I used to get comments that 4 children was too many and refused to feel bad about it. Now a friend tells me she gets criticized because she has only one and some people find that selfish. Sometimes you can't win. It is so nice to run into helpful people when in public with small kids.

Even with three kids people give you looks sometimes. I have several friends with four and two with five (one intentionally, one intended to have four, but well, these things happen!) and some of the comments they get...

But what I was really going to comment on was unwanted art. No one has yet made me have a quilting horror story, luckily, but I have been giving framed pictures which were pretty dire. Luckily, none of them were originals, so I didn't feel bad about getting rid of them.

Oh, and if you want to swap postcards with someone who WILL appreciate your work, I'd be happy to trade with you!

I was once given a picture of two fuzzy kittens that looked like they were made from carpet...It had been hand carried on the plane from China to the US by a friend's fiancee. Not at all our style, but it eventually found a good home with two little girls who adored it. I always wonder, though, if people will really want my quilts. Three receipients have been gushing, so I am sure they were happy (or good actors), but there are two recipients of table toppers that I wonder about!

Small tokens like postcards are wonderful gestures--much like greeting cards and I think they will be warmly received.

If you want to sharpen your skills, keep working on quilts and postcards and donate them. There are always people who would love something handmade. (But you knew that already!).

Give your pieces a little bit of you and some love and then let them free to work their intended magic.

I don't think you have to worry about people not wanting your cards. Every one that I have sent has been very much appreciated. People call to tell me how much they like them. And since a card isn't a BIG piece of art, if they don't like it they won't feel like they have to keep it. In any case, the thought will be appreciated.

Quilts are a bit touchier. I've given at least one that I don't think was appreciated at all. But the process is what counts I think, so I don't care too much.
