Favorite children's series...
1. Harry Potter because I think it got so many people reading. It also got my dad and son closer when they were standing in the Denver airport and my dad said, "Look at all these muggles." My son decided then and there that my dad was the coolest grandparent ever. And he tells people that all the time.
2. The Little House books, well the original ones. I haven't read the Caroline series, etc that they have come out with that are prequels to the Laura series.
3. Trixie Belden series. I know, not very high brow, but a lot of fun to read. I read them all a bunch of times. My sister has all our copies, and I read them every time I go to her house. (Not all of them, but some each time.)

Wow Jules, that's quite a comprehensive list! I'm really impressed--I don't know anything at all about children's books except what I read as a child--Nancy Drew. Final answer.
Jules, we have very similar tastes. If you don't already, you will be pleased to know Alexander must have turned out okay, despite thinking he might move to Australia. I see Alex Viorst in Bank of America (Alexandria area, I think) commercials, and he looks exactly like his mother! (I used to love her books and columns in "Redbook" magazine.)
(See, this is the sort of junk I could make my fortune with, if I just knew how to market it.)
I'd have to agree with Harry Potter and Trixie Belden - of course, I discovered Harry as an adult, but spent many, many happy hours with Trixie and her friends and family as a kid. My best friend who lives in Austin and I took her grandson on vacation with us one summer - to Colorado - so to keep Stephen entertained in the car, I read books from the Hank the Cow Dog series outloud - they were hysterical - written by a lawyer, these books had to be a hell of a lot more fun than the law!
The Witch of Blackbird Pond has always been one of my favorite children's books, I suppose it falls in that young adult category? Also Ann Rinaldi's trilogy about a family quilt.
