Catching Up

I had a wonderful Christmas in Chicago. I visited my sister and her family there. My brother-in-law got us tickets to "Wicked" which I loved. I am going to start reading the book this week, although I am sure the book and musical are different. If you have not heard of "Wicked," it is about the lives of the Witches of Oz before Dorothy so unceremoniously plopped her house down on one of them. I loved it. Did I mention that?

I also got to have dinner at the American Girl Place. What a lovely evening, and a great way to expose young girls to formal dining, but in a friendly setting. Great food. Great time had by all, including Elizabeth and Felicity, the dolls who came with us. They even bring the dolls food and drink. It would be very easy to spend a fortune in that place.

I have decided on a theme for the Journal Quilts Challenge. I am going to do a verb of the month. January's verb will be Live. February's will be Love. That's as far as I've gotten. My plan is to start designing today for January.

I bought my first Quilting Arts magazine yesterday at the grocery. I have never seen it at the grocery before. I feel like a little synchronicity was at work there as I have been avoinding the magazine section recently because magazines are definately a "latte factor" for me. What a cool magazine. I am going to subscribe as a birthday present to myself.

Your theme sounds like a great idea Jules! I've decided that my theme is going to be "no theme." I have 5 ideas so far, but haven't figured out a way to relate them, so I'll just go with the interest factor. Maybe all of you can help me find some "relatedness" as they unfold.

So interested in your American Girl experience. My DD was there in October and loved it. Brought home a baby for Ella as a warm- up for the more grown-up dolls later. I can't wait--we'll get to make some clothes together. I am furious with dimwits who want to demonize American Girl--parents who had their kids picketing should be ashamed. American Girl dolls are a much healthier role model than Barbie, for heaven's sake. Off the soapbox. Thanks for the report.

I was so jazzed to walk across that picket line, but I guess it was too cold for them to be there that evening.

My boys both have the Bitty Baby dolls that my mom has made boy clothes for. She also buys the Bitty Twins clothes and splits the sets between my boys and their girl cousins. My little one will get one, soon, I think. We let my mom do the Bitty Babies.

I have a dress pattern my mom made for Bitty Baby. I can copy and send it to you if you wish. They no longer make the patterns for the clothes for the big girl dolls, but my mom got them on E-bay.

Picket line for an American Girl experience?? I've never heard of this particular bit of idiocy - but the narrow-mindedness of people never ceases to amaze me!

I just wish I could have the dolls too. What a fabulous bit of imagining with the doll and the books.

I wondered where you were--welcome back!

Sounds like you had a great time, Jules. My oldest dd has 4 A.G dolls and I bought the patterns and made her some dresses. I was surprised that I actually enjoyed making them as I don't overly enjoy making garment sewing. Youngest dd isn't the least bit interested in dolls though...so I guess my time in making doll clothing is done. :o/

Jules, there have also been several book discussion threads on the about.com forum, and I remember the book Wicked being discussed in one of them - the general consensus was very good as I recall.

Well, I'm relieved to know I'm not the only one who thinks these people are morons and to use their children is despicable. (Pardon me if I'm putting words in anyone's mouth--my foot is usually in my own!) Don't get me started on Barbie, but that was one doll that never crossed our threshold. I learned about AG dolls from a lawyer friend who bought one for her stepdaughter. I was blown away. (I still have my own large Madame Alexander dolls and I adored them as a child.)

But, now, speak to me of Bitty Baby. I'm not acquainted with her. Jules, you never specify but I take it you have two children and they are both of the male persuasion? You seem like such a girly-girl (that's NOT a slight!), do you have a daughter? My lawyer friend above is very girly-girl and she has boys, so she stays on her toes to keep up with them.

Sounds like a wonderful time in Chicago. I've heard of the American Girl dolls but not the American girl place, or the protests. The American Girl Place sounds like alot of fun. Kind of makes me wish I was a kid again! Good luck with you Journal Quilts challenge.

Oooh, I saw Wicked last fall and was in love instantly- but then, I read he book years ago and also was in love instantly. It's very different, but a great read! Enjoy.

Sounds intriguing. Out of the loop on dolls these days, but don't forget eBay as a place to offer AG clothes, especially your sewn originals. And AG doll sized knitted sweaters etc...I had a few students years ago who loved them.
